6 Things that Satan Cannot Do

I know Satan was created as a beautiful angel, which means he does not have the same powers that God has. He is not the opposite of God. There are more things that Satan can not do, but I kept my list to six things. The last one is my favorite.

1. He is not the opposite of God and is subordinate to God

It is encouraging to know that Satan has limitations and is nothing like God at all. God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and present everywhere. Satan has none of those abilities and depends on God for his existence.

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. Job 1:6

2. He cannot hurt anyone or take a life without God’s permission

Satan had to approach God when he wanted to hurt Job.

And the LORD said unto Satan, “From whence comest thou?” And Satan answered the LORD, and said, “From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down on it.”

And the LORD said unto Satan, “Have thou considered my servant Job? There is no one like him in the earth, a perfect and upright man, one that feareth God and escheweth evil. And still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.” And Satan answered the LORD, “Skin for skin, yea,all that a man hath will he give for his life. But put forth thine hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.” And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.” Job 2:2-6

3. He cannot force believers to do things

Satan has no power unless it is granted to him by God. When you trust in Jesus Christ and have him in your heart, you are freed from the authority of the devil.

To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith in me. Acts 26:18

4. He cannot read our thoughts
Because he is a created being, Satan cannot read our thoughts. He is not all-knowing like the LORD. God alone knows everything – including our thoughts.

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; His understanding is unsearchable. Isaiah 40:28

The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man…Psalm 94:11

Jesus also knows our thoughts. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, “Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? Matthew 9:4

5. Satan does not know the future

Again, only God knows that. Thankfully. Neither the angels, Satan or the demons know what will happen next.

Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is none else; for I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure;’ Isaiah 46:9-10

6. Satan is a coward!

In spite of how much Satan would like you to believe he is bold and powerful, he is simply a coward.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7

Isn’t it comforting to know that Satan is limited in his powers? I am glad to know that he cannot read my thoughts or know the future. I chuckle every time I think of Satan running away.
