A good friend of mine lost her son recently. Wilma spent a lot of time in Michigan with him during his fight with cancer. Thursday evening I visited the funeral home to pay my respects. She knew he was saved and going to heaven, but that still did not make it any easier to say goodbye. She told me how her husband had passed away at the young age of 68 and now her youngest son passed away a few days after turning 68 years old. It’s seems a bit odd some of the things we focus on when we lose a loved one.

When I remember my dad I always see him sitting on the end of the sofa with the Sunday paper in his lap and the table lamp on. He did that so often when I was living at home. That was the way I found him after I rushed over to check on him. He seemed perfectly natural and I expected him to smile and say hello.

The funeral home’s card had this poem. There is nothing to identify who wrote the poem, but I thought it had a message for us – to not be sorrowful and remember the joy, the good times, and our loved one’s touch.

I’m Free

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free,

I’m following the path God laid for me.

I took his hand when I heard his call,

I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,

To laugh, to love, to work, to play.

Tasks left undone must stay that way,

I’ve found that peace at the close of the day.

If my parting has left a void,

Then fill it with remembered joy.

A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,

Ah yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow,

I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.

My life’s been full, I savored much,

Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,

Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.

Lift up your heart and share with me,

God wanted me now, He set me free.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23

For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God; Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8,9
