That’s From the Bible?

How many times have you heard a phrase you knew was from the Bible, but could not think of where. I came across a list of them and decided to share some with you. These are the ones that I’ve thought of the most often. All verses are from my KJV Bible and some of the meanings are not the same as we use them today.

Let there be light

Definition: A lighthearted remark when someone turns on a light.
Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light; and there was light.

The land of Nod

Definition: An informal phrase meaning sleep.
Genesis 4:16 And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

As old as Methuselah

Definition: Someone or something that is extremely old.
Genesis 5:27 And all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died.

Put words in one’s mouth

Definition: The false suggestion that someone said or meant something else.
2 Samuel 14:3 And come to the king and speak on this manner unto him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.

Be a man

Definition: A call to take courage and be strong.
1 Kings 2:2 I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man.

By the skin of your teeth

Definition: Very narrow margin (i.e. time, efficiency or competency) of completion.
Job 19:20 My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.

The root of the matter

Definition: The core reason for something.
Job 19:28 But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me?

Bite the dust

Definition: Stop existing or living. Die.
Psalms 72:9 They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust!

At Wits’ end

Definition: An exhausted state of worry or distress.
Psalm 107:27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end.

A little birdie told me

Definition: A lighthearted phrase to withhold the source of information.
Ecclesiastes 10:20 Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber; for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.

Rise and shine

Definition: A call to wake up, get out of bed and start the day.
Isaiah 60:1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.

Go the extra mile

Definition: Go above and beyond what is necessary or expected.
Matthew 5:41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

Throw the first stone

Definition: Be the first to judge something or someone critically.
John 8:7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

Twinkling of an eye

Definition: Something that happens very quickly.
1 Corinthians 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
