Faith Filled Friday: Giving Thanks and Counting Blessings

October 18, 2019

A friend of mine posted on Facebook about our Christian blessings and responsibilities. Two points I wanted to talk about on this Faith Filled Friday are giving thanks and counting your blessings.
In Everything Give Thanks
Sometimes giving thanks is hard to do when everything seems to be going wrong. I have thanked the Lord for some of the problems because they helped me understand better how to help a friend or family member, and even myself.
Paul said, “Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Th. 5:16-18).
Sometimes my prayers have been simply praise and thanks to God. I try to thank Him in every prayer, but I doubt that I do.
When things go right, it’s easy to give thanks to God; but when it’s a bad day, my first cry is “Why, God?” It is not always easy to see the benefits of the trials we go through.
Count Your Blessings
The song, Count Your Many Blessings, sums up these thoughts:
When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will be singing as the days go by.

So, amid the conflicts, whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God hath done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.

Ephesians has many verses about our blessings in the Lord. Ephesians 2:8,9 lets us know that by God’s grace we are saved through faith – truly a huge blessing. We are also blessed to be a member of God’s family and a citizen of heaven (Ephesians 2:19).
Like the song says, count your blessings, name them one by one. It helps you focus on the good things, and put the bad things in proper perspective.
If you’ve not counted your blessings lately, try it. It really works! You’ll feel better, trust God more, be happier, and rejoice in the Lord.
