30 DAY VOCABULARY CHALLENGE

April 7, 2014

This past week was the first week of a vocabulary challenge offered by another fellow blogger: onegoodthingbyjillee.com

I loved English as a student and thought I had a fairly good vocabulary–until I saw this list. I knew 3 out of the 30. There were several more I guessed at based on root, but ended up way off. So have fun with this first group. I’ve given you the definitions. Following it is the next week’s list of words sans definitions. Write down your guesses and see how close you are. This will be weekly until the end of the month. Try to use these during the week. Good luck!

carapace: hard shell of certain organisms such as arthropods and turtles

vivisection: the act of operating on living animals (especially in scientific research)

hermitage: the abode of a hermit (why can’t he live in a house or a trailer like the rest of us?)

pusillanimous: lacking courage and resolution; marked by contemptible timidity

NEXT WEEK’S WORD LIST: April 7 -13
