Benefits of Dates

1) Dates are free from cholesterol and contain very low fat. Dates are rich in vitamins and minerals.

2) They are rich source of protein, dietary fiber and rich in vitamin B1, B2, B3 and B5 along with vitamin A1 and C.

3) It helps improve the digestive system as it contains soluble and insoluble fibers and different kinds of amino acids.

4) Dates are great energy boosters as they contain natural sugars like glucose, sucrose and fructose. To get more advantage add dates to milk and make it a very nutritious snack.

5) Dates are very low in calories and are extremely suitable for health conscious people.

6) Dates are rich in potassium and low in sodium. This helps regulate a healthy nervous system. Researchers have revealed the fact that potassium intake up to a certain extent can reduce risk of stroke.

7) Dates also help in lowering of the LDL cholesterol.

8) Dates have high iron content and are very useful in treating anemia.

This was sent via email from a friend of mine. I have not studied dates much, but I do question the claims made in #12. Aiding in clearing alcoholic intoxication sounds reasonable, but claiming to “cure” cancer is a stretch. It may, like I said, since I’ve not studied dates and know little about them. There was no name with this to verify where the information came from. Please, don’t make any changes without verifying with your doctor or nutritionist.

  1. If only it were that simple. I don’t know much about dates other than they make a damn good square.There are no magic foods other than common sense. That said, I’ll back track a little – there are things we can eat to improve our health – there aren’t any foods that will absorb alcohol or make up for years of lousy nutrition overnight 🙂

    • Thank you for your reply. After I get my book off to an agent I thought I would take time to look up about dates. I’ve never used them much. They sounded like such a mighty fruit and should be in everyone’s diet. As a retired RN I figured one handful wouldn’t be enough to cure anything, let alone cancer or cirrhosis, but maybe making them a part of one’s diet on a regular basis would be of help. You mentioned date squares. Do you have a recipe for those that you would care to share?
